WEST VILLAGE | Private Residence

Set in a classic West Village building dating to the turn of the twentieth century, this apartment is rich with the kinds of architectural quirks that only time can produce: exposed beams, quirky proportions, and a sense of intimacy shaped by decades of lived-in history. The brief was to honor that character while creating a space that felt imaginative, personal, and distinctly of the present.

To that end, RJ softened and reframed the home’s more rustic elements, tempering the weighty beams with star-studded ceilings and introducing unexpected pops of color. The homeowners—whose other residences skew modern and boldly colorful—wanted this apartment to feel playful while still respecting its traditional pedigree, so RJ combined graphic Sandburg wallpapers with iconic vintage furniture: a 1950s Herman Miller office chair in red suede, lithographs by Warhol and Jean Cocteau, and a one-of-a-kind Murano glass chandelier in unforgettable electric turquoise.

The palette shifts from light and airy in the living spaces to deeper, more contemplative tones in the bedroom. The result is a space layered with beauty, humor, and personality.
